Youth Secretariat

Mission Statement:

"Our Youth are our future and they must be prepared to accept the challenges the future holds"

About the Youth Secretariat:

The youth secretariat hosts two annual gatherings each year. One being the Annual Regional Youth Gathering which is usually during spring break to accommodate those who attend school during this time of the year. The Youth Secretariat sends info on the gathering to all the First Nation Communities within Manitoba by Fax, Email and mail out. If you are a youth and want to attend this particular youth gathering look for upcoming registration materials on this website and in your own home community.

The other youth gathering that we host is the Traditional Youth Gathering and with this gathering we try to incorporate as much traditional activities as we can that accommodates the region that we hold in. The traditional youth gathering is in a different language territory each year so far we have held it in the Cree, Dakota and Ojibwe communities. Each year the activities differ depending on what the focus of the gathering is; but we still have the basic of activities which is building sweat lodges and experiencing a sweat as well as learning about the medicines and other factors of the culture.

The Youth Secretariat has known to provide other programs in the past such as the Keewatin Winnipeg Youth Initiative. The Keewatin Winnipeg Youth Initiative was held in the north area of Winnipeg and was open to youth between the ages of 15 – 30 where the program had provided youth to learn how to make a resume and cover letter in order to attain a job. The program had four phases where about 100 or more youth graduated from the program who then after completing the program the youth had seeks employment and schooling. The program completed its training in 2005.

The Youth Secretariat in the summer of 2006 had organized a Kids day camp where the summer students provided activities such as story telling, arts & crafts making as well as a morning of learning the safe ways of accessing a computer’s search engine for kids who frequented the internet. The students had also taken the Kids for daily recreational activities such as playing baseball, swimming and relay race’s.
