Protecting against viruses
All AMC Staff computers employ the corporate edition of Norton’s Antivirus Software. Updates to cope with new viruses will download automatically to your machine as soon as we receive them are quietly.
AMC Staff should be aware that the anti-virus software cannot automatically detect newly developed viruses. You should therefore take the following precautions to guard against attack:
- Become familiar with the operation of the anti-virus software and do not change the scanning properties.
- Only acquire antivirus software and updates from reputable sources.
- Do not load unauthorized software (particularly games) onto your computer.
- Do not use unsolicited floppy disks or CD-ROMs received from unreliable sources.
- Not open email attachments from unsolicited or untrustworthy sources.
- Monitor 'IT announcements' email for new virus alerts and take appropriate action.
Viruses from Email
Email attachments are the most common source of viruses. Never open or respond to any attachment that appears suspect, or originates from an unfamiliar source. If you did NOT ask for it, do NOT open it.
Unsolicited emails (also called spam) offer unlikely invitations to get-rich-quick schemes and others of a more prurient nature. These are normally a scam and may also contain viruses.
With the introduction of Outlook there is a firewall and ‘gatekeeper technology designed to trap incoming emails that are known to be spam and viruses - however this process is not 100 % successful and staff caution remains important.
- Never open any attachment contained in these emails.
- Delete the entire message immediately.
- Check any files you receive from any external source and work out a sensible back-up regime to cover yourself if the worst happens.
New Virus Alerts
IT staff monitor appropriate sites for news about new virus attacks, and circulate warning messages to staff through the 'IT Announcements' and 'all-staff email'.
